Renting out your ʻohana? You can still save
Upcountry lots often have a main house and an ʻohana. Maui County's Long-Term Rental rules treat those two setups differently:
- You live in the main house and rent the ʻohana long-term. You keep your home exemption and the Owner-Occupied class, and you can add a $100,000 long-term rental exemption.
- You don't live on the property. You get one $200,000 exemption per parcel, and the County applies the Long-Term Rental rate to the whole property when it qualifies.
Either way, the tenant needs a lease of 12 consecutive months or more. The deadline to file DFT-466 for 2027 is December 31, 2026.
